The Cockpit Drill before you start your engine

The cockpit drill consists of making sure you are safe and comfortable in your car before you start the engine.  It may seem obvious but it is absolutely crucial that you feel at ease in your car and familiar with the controls.

The first thing you should do is make sure that you have securely closed all your doors, give the door a firm movement and if in doubt, re-open and close firmly again.  However, if you do open your door you must check the relevant side mirror and over your shoulder to make sure there is nothing about to overtake you on that side.  Once that is done, adjust your seat to make sure you are at an appropriate height.  You should be able to press the clutch in fully without a stretch on your leg.  Your back should be reasonably straight and your headrest should be in line with the back of your head.

Next is the mirrors.  Make sure that your centre mirror is fixed in such a way that you only have to glance with your eyes.  You shouldn't have to move your head excessively or dip your head down to see in the mirror.  You should be able to view everything out the back window, including your back wiper if you have one.  The gearstick should also be in neutral with the handbrake fully up.  You also have to fasten your seatbelt.

Finally you should make certain that the steering wheel is adjusted so you can reach it easily.  There should be a small bend in your elbows as you have your hands in the 3.45 position on the wheel.  Most steering wheels can be adjusted via a release lever under the steering wheel but above your legs.

You should also be aware of the other controls in the car such as wipers, wiper washers, lights, hazard lights, fog lights, demisters, signals, electric windows, side mirror adjustments.  The more knowledgeable you are about your car the better off you will be.
